Abstract

Childhood restless legs syndrome is a sensori-motor disorder characterized by an irresistible urge to move the lower or upper extremities. It is usually accompanied by uncomfortable and unpleasant sensations in the legs which are worse at night. Symptoms worsen during periods of rest and improve with voluntary movement. The diagnosis can be facilitated by asking leading questions about symptoms, assessing their impact on sleep and daytime function, and by reviewing patient drawings of leg discomfort. Early recognition and management can improve daytime functioning and overall quality of life.
